download

Download almost empty

Pick your system and follow the steps. The 7-day trial starts when you install and sign in with Google; it doesn't ask for a card.

YOUR SYSTEM

macOS

Requirements: macOS 15 or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel.

.dmg coming soon almost-empty-macos.dmg
  1. Download the .dmg file and double-click it to open.
  2. In the window that opens, drag almost empty onto the Applications folder.
  3. Open almost empty from Applications. Its icon shows up in the menu bar, next to the clock.
  4. Open the app and sign in with Google when it asks: that's when your 7-day trial starts.

If macOS asks for your Mac's password

It can happen when you drag the app into Applications, if that folder asks for administrator permission on your Mac. It's the password of an administrator of that Mac, and it's only used to copy the app into Applications.

If it says the app was downloaded from the Internet

The first time, macOS may ask whether you want to open an app downloaded from the Internet: choose Open. The app is signed and notarized by Apple, so macOS shouldn't ask you to “open anyway” or to change any security settings.

Verify the download (SHA-256)

Calculate the file's SHA-256 checksum and compare it with your file's line in SHA256SUMS.txt. If they don't match, don't open it and write to us.

shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/almost-empty-*-macos.dmg
Uninstall

Quit almost empty and drag its icon from the Applications folder to the Trash.

YOUR SYSTEM

Windows

Requirements: Windows 11 (x64).

.msi coming soon almost-empty-windows.msi

Why Windows shows a warning

When you open the installer, SmartScreen may say “Windows protected your PC”. That's expected: the .msi installer doesn't carry a publisher signature yet, and SmartScreen warns about any installer from a publisher it doesn't know. It doesn't mean Windows found anything in the file. To check that it's ours, compare its SHA-256 checksum (below).

  1. Download the .msi file. Depending on your browser, it may warn that the file isn't commonly downloaded: choose to keep it.
  2. Double-click the .msi. If the “Windows protected your PC” window appears, click “More info”.

A sketch of the window, not a screenshot: the exact text can vary with your Windows version and language.

  3. The “Run anyway” button appears: click it.
  4. Follow the install wizard. If Windows asks for administrator permission, accept.
  5. Open almost empty from the Start menu. If you don't see its icon next to the clock, look in the hidden-icons arrow on the taskbar.
  6. Open the app and sign in with Google when it asks: that's when your 7-day trial starts.
Verify the download (SHA-256)

In PowerShell, calculate the file's SHA-256 checksum and compare it with your file's line in SHA256SUMS.txt:

Get-FileHash $HOME\Downloads\almost-empty-*-windows.msi -Algorithm SHA256

If the checksums don't match, don't run the installer and write to us at [email protected].

Uninstall

Open Settings, go to Apps, then Installed apps, find almost empty and choose Uninstall.

YOUR SYSTEM

Ubuntu

Requirements: 64-bit Ubuntu (amd64). The package requires glibc 2.43 or later; if your Ubuntu is older, apt will say so and won't install it.

.deb coming soon almost-empty-ubuntu.deb
  1. Download the .deb file.
  2. Install it by double-clicking (it opens in Software or in your desktop's package installer, depending on the version) or, from a terminal:
    cd "$(xdg-user-dir DOWNLOAD)"
    sudo apt install ./almost-empty-*-ubuntu.deb

If double-clicking doesn't open an installer, use the terminal: it's the most direct route.

  3. If almost empty doesn't show up in the applications menu, open it by typing almostempty in a terminal.
  4. Open the app and sign in with Google when it asks: that's when your 7-day trial starts.

Administrator password

Installing a package needs administrator permission: Ubuntu will ask for your user password (in the terminal for sudo, or in a system authentication window). It isn't an almost empty password.

If you don't see the icon next to the clock

On GNOME, tray icons depend on the AppIndicator extension: check that it's enabled in the Extensions app. We haven't tested every Ubuntu version, and yours may not show a tray icon yet.

Verify the download (SHA-256)

Calculate the file's SHA-256 checksum and compare it with your file's line in SHA256SUMS.txt. If they don't match, don't open it and write to us.

sha256sum "$(xdg-user-dir DOWNLOAD)"/almost-empty-*-ubuntu.deb
Uninstall
sudo apt remove almostempty-app

The same on all three
